Preventative Health

Preparing Fruit Juice

Preventative health is a major priority for the Doctors at Milton Village Medical. There are so many diseases that can be prevented or better-managed by early detection. The RACGP provides comprehensive guidelines for GPs to follow to maximise the health of our patients.   This is one of the reasons the Doctor will take a full medical history from you if it is the first time you’ve been to our practice, even if you have just come in about a sprained ankle. The Doctors want to take every opportunity to find out if there are any preventative screening tests or examinations you should be considering. (If you don’t have time for this, or if you have another GP taking care of your preventative health needs, please let the Doctor know at the time.) The major conditions that they will be screening you for include:

  • High blood pressure (hypertension)

  • Diabetes

  • Heart disease, including checking cholesterol, family history, your smoking history, etc

  • Lifestyle related disease – alcohol, smoking, other drugs, stress

  • Weight issues – checking BMI/abdominal circumference, offering strategies for weight management

  • Bowel cancer

  • Skin cancer

  • Cervical cancer (previously called Pap smears)

  • Breast cancer– Mammograms/USS/Breast MRI as indicated

  • Prostate cancer

  • Osteoporosis
