Dr Katherine Shanley
Dr Katherine Shanley was born in South Africa, and came to Australia as a 12 year old, settling with her family in Brisbane’s western suburbs. Dr Shanley's father and sister are both doctors, so medical matters were a frequent topic of dinner-table conversation! After graduation from UQ, she worked at the Royal Brisbane and Women’s Hospital for 2 years, and then moved to Bundaberg where she completed her General Practice training. Soon after gaining her Fellowship in 1995, Dr Shanley left Australia for a couple of years to travel in Africa and Europe, and work in the UK. After honing her skills in psychiatry, paediatrics and obstetrics in the British hospital system, she returned (very happily) to general practice in Brisbane in 1997. For a couple of years Dr Shanley worked at Family Planning Queensland, which was a great place to learn a lot about all aspects of women’s health and sexual health.
Then from 2000-2004 Dr Shanley enjoyed 4 years off medical work to stay home as a full-time mum to her two (now teen-aged) boys. When Dr Shanley returned to work, she started at Healthy Women in Indooroopilly, where she met her good friend and colleague, Dr Mardi Vory. Since then Dr Shanley has worked in a variety of different jobs and gained experience in just about every aspect of general practice. She particularly enjoys getting to know her patients and their families. Dr Shanley joined Barracks Medical in 2010, now Milton Village Medical, and like all of our staff here, she aims to provide a high standard of holistic health care.
Dr Shanley's special interests include women’s health, men’s health, children’s health, mental health and travel medicine.
When not at work, Dr Shanley loves spending time with my family (including her 3 Burmese cats), looking after her garden, reading, watching a bit of Netflix, writing (a little bit), cooking, trying to learn the piano, listening to Richard Fidler podcasts, and travelling whenever she gets the chance
