Dr Katherine Shanley

I was born in South Africa, and came to Australia as a 12 year old, settling with my family in Brisbane’s western suburbs. My father and sister are both doctors, so medical matters were a frequent topic of dinner-table conversation! After graduation from UQ, I worked at the Royal Brisbane and Women’s Hospital for 2 years, and then moved to Bundaberg where I completed my General Practice training. Soon after gaining my Fellowship in 1995, I left Australia for a couple of years to travel in Africa and Europe, and work in the UK. After honing my skills in psychiatry, paediatrics and obstetrics in the British hospital system, I returned (very happily) to general practice in Brisbane in 1997. For a couple of years I worked at Family Planning Queensland, which was a great place to learn a lot about all aspects of women’s health and sexual health.

Then from 2000-2004 I enjoyed 4 years off medical work to stay home as a full-time mum to my two (now teen-aged) boys. When I returned to work, I started at Healthy Women in Indooroopilly, where I met my good friend and colleague, Dr Mardi Vory. Since then I’ve worked in a variety of different jobs and gained experience in just about every aspect of general practice. I particularly enjoy getting to know my patients and their families.  I joined Barracks Medical in 2010, and like all of our staff here, I aim to provide a high standard of holistic health care.

My special interests include women’s health, men’s health, children’s health, mental health and travel medicine.

When I’m not at work I love spending time with my family (including my 3 Burmese cats), looking after my garden, reading, watching a bit of Netflix,  writing (a little bit), cooking, trying to learn the piano, listening to Richard Fidler podcasts, and travelling whenever I get the chance
